That Seventies Show

The fact that we realised there was a strong 90's reference in many of the Resort 2011 shows counteracts the elements of the 70's taking over others. It's created a balance between silhouette and surface design and my personal favourite collection has to be by Phoebe Philo at Celine. She's kept it incredibly modern at the same time as referencing the decade that saw political and social liberation.
Givenchy comes in as a close second with a collection that takes on a journey and uses transparent elements to add interest to an otherwise very beautifully tailored range.
Balenciaga takes the suit and gives it a new lease on life. The colour palette continues to run with this 70's theme and the elements combine to provide a very succinct collection.
A play on various elements from different decades has run deep through Chanel's collections the past few collections, and this one was no different. In keeping with the resort style, all the models had a carefree nature and the extensive range was purely in keeping with Chanel's aesthetic.
Alexander Wang gave us experimental answers to creative questions. That's what the free-love decade was all about wasn't it? Peace.

Badgley Mischka Resort 2011

With style and grace in abundance at Badgley Mischka's Resort 2011 showing, the shapes and colours speak for themselves. Paired against neutral white and metallic fabrics, vibrant fuscia, cornflower blue and shocking yellow take the collection to a new level. I couldn't quite understand the choice of prints, they seemed to come out of no where, but I guess the designers are giving their customer a little bit of everything. Dive in.

Black One Shoulder

With drapes in all the right places and an incredible proportion as a result, the black one shoulder dress just got interesting. Cameron Diaz completely blitzes the dress, eclipsing past all expectations of another little black number and outshining to hush the toughest of critics. As always, she's combining it with a smile, the biggest winner in this ensemble.
America Ferrera couldn't be further from her character either. With definition at the waist, flattering drapes over her hips and the eye drawn upwards thanks to this one shoulder style, the dress proves it's best in black. Simple and understated, she's ultimately classic and comfortable, two of the most important factors to remember.
So speaking of completely eclipsing and evolving, does anyone remember Nick Carter and Howie Donoghue from The Backstreet Boys? Check them out now, 15 years after they first burst onto the scene to transform boybands worldwide. It's like a mirage.

I attended the most informative seminar last night, and learned that what I've been experimenting with through this series of entries really is something greater than just documenting what I'm wearing. It lends itself to suggestions of how I portray myself to others and therefore, how I wish to be perceived. This is an area I've had a huge fascination with since my years studying at university; the very title of this blog is a reflection of my interest as I endeavour to understand how people use clothing as a tool to build their own profile in society. This takes them from any situation combining their personality and how they conduct their behaviour in public with their physical appearance. It's sad but true, people will make a judgment of how you look before you've even uttered a word. This is your 'fashion language', and that's why I call this series

How do you want people to describe you when you're not there? That's the trick, and your clothing makes up a percentage, but it's also you're impression on people that you leave, which will determine their perception of you. My vocabulary today shows I'm in a very light and fashion forward mood, I wanted to have fun with fashion today and it's resulted in something completely black and white but very consistent to my personal style. What you see is what you get. It's as simple as that.

The most challenging part of keeping a log of entries such as these has been dealing with the repetition as you may have noticed. But it's all worth it on days like today when I get to wear outfits like this. I bought this Willow dress when I purchased the white shirt dress, black shirt dress and khaki full skirt that you've seen me wear a few times throughout this experiment. It always brightens my day, thanks no doubt to the orange hue that's not always easy to wear. I have to be in the right mood for this dress, and I fear, so does anyone else around me. It always garners a comment (mostly complimentary), even sporting the shoulder pads. So cheer up everyone, turn that frown upside down and enjoy the sunshine.

My, my do we have some catching up to do. Driving through the incredibly beautiful misty Hunter Valley on my way back to a 9am start in Sydney, there's a resounding joy in the air at the knowledge of a shorter week. I've missed this little outfit, haven't worn it for a while but it's still a favourite. With my wrap cardigan tucked into a Jac & Jack knit skirt, accompanied by tights and my Marc Jacobs pumps, I'm ready to go. It's always refreshing wearing a colour on top and keeping the rest all very simple from the waist down. I like to add a little textural interest though, even though it's black by combining the knitted skirt and patent heels for something different to the more expected textures. A very wise friend brought it to my attention on Sunday that KISS stood for Keep It Simple Stupid. So I am.

If you feel like you're watching the exact same spin, it's not deja vu, you are. What better way to spend an incredibly relaxing holiday Monday than with homemade burgers and wine on the back verandah. And call it what you will, laziness or pure conservation, I'm comfortable. The new working week will bring all kinds of surprises so it's only fair that I keep it simple and not fuss over this double up. Neither should you. Please tell me everyone's guilty. Speaking of other guilty pleasures, a tub of gelato from the Smelly Cheese Shop awaits. No glitches in this system.
