In rememberance | Irving Penn
It’s time to farewell the brilliant Irving Penn, one of the most celebrated and influential photographers of the twentieth century. He passed away on the seventh, aged 92 at his home in Manhattan. Penn shot more than 150 covers for British VOGUE, more than any other photographer. Most famous for his fashion photographs and portraits of prominent cultural figures, Penn's body of work also included studies of ordinary people, still lives and nudes. All sigh as it’s announced a pre-scheduled exhibition of Penn's photographs will open at The National Portrait Gallery in London on 18 February 2010 (until 31 May 2010) and will be the first UK show of his work in twenty years. Those lucky enough to be in London during that time should definitely keep the exhibition on their radar.
One of Penn's favourite subjects was his wife Lisa Fonssagrives, a leading fashion model of the Forties and Fifties who appeared in some of Penn's most widely reproduced pictures. They were married in 1950 and remained together until her death in 1992.
His legendary images will live on, as the industry remembers.
