Autumn Winter 2011 Couture

Taken away to another world, and make that a very colourful world, John Galliano proves why fashion is fantasy with his Christian Dior couture spectacle. Blooming and bursting with colour and never shying away from a voluminous skirt, waists were cinched and all focus was taken away from many a bare shoulder to the party happening below them.
Givenchy couture was exquisitely skeletal, perfectly minimal in quantity but showing exactly what the philosophy of couture is. These are one off, made-to-order pieces that take an army of dedicated experts hours and hours to build, it makes sense for the collection to be sharp and concise.
The delicacy that Girogio Armani, Alexis Mabille and Bouchra Jarrar displayed on the other hand goes to show that there must be an awful lot of detail in the finite. Learning couturier techniques at university proved to me that the under garments that hold the couture pieces in place really do require hours of precision and technique, intricate in their execution. Mabille and Jarrar's collections appear to me personally to mask these techniques as their collection appears more ready-to-wear, however that could be a result of the extremely high level of expertise. I was always taught that it's good design if the user never notices it.
