New York AW10 | Day Seven

Day Seven in Bryant Park may not have been the best day in my books. It was definitely the day that pulled the biggest names in the front rows though, with celebrities all taking in the sights. See for yourself.
3.1 Phillip Lim got things going with clever felting and interesting cuts and shapes. He's read the season with precision and I think there'll be many favoured clients with smiles on their dials.
Michael Kors took us on a wild winter wilderness expedition, fuzzy knee high boots and all. But his stunning cowl necklines, long wool skirts and tan belts make the wilderness all the more exciting.
Sadly, I wasn't as enthusiastic about Oscar De La Renta's AW10 showing. Not entirely sure it's age appropriate for anyone under the age of forty, or maybe it was just the scary 80's blow wave putting me off, but I couldn't appreciate the fur hems or colourful prints because they didn't really feel very relevant.
I could see what the Proenza Schouler boys were trying to achieve, it was definitely a continuation on what they started last season. But I couldn't get excited about their prints either. All they really did was add black tights to the collection and it could have been Spring Summer again.
Brian Reyes did a good job of getting the basics right, and when you can do that, you know you've set the canvas for greater things. We're still waiting for those greater things though, and we could possibly be waiting a while.
There are people out there who would wear William Rast just because Justin Timberlake is on the design team. But that's not enough to show that this collection is going to succeed. Certainly from an Australian market point of view, the green cargo pants and denim mini skirts just won't fly. Sorry JT. Stick to your day job.
So to conclude for the fun of it, enjoy Jeremy Scott's black, white and yellow concoction. Belts in life size figures could be the way of the future. He's taken crazy ideas and brought them to life, surprise, surprise it's the most interesting thing we've seen on the runway today. Risks paying off. Priceless.
As so eloquently put in Ten Thing's I Hate About You; "I know you can be overwhelmed or underwhelmed, but can you ever just be whelmed?"
