New York AW10 | Day Six

Blazing ahead with a stand out collection on day six, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's The Row brilliantly executed the disheveled chic that these girls built an empire around. Evolving their business ventures continuously, things were in the majority leaning towards black and over sized, but that's what we're expected to buy into if we're associating in this circle anyway isn't it? This is one row I'm happy to sit in.
Taking thing's of the straight and narrow and spiraling them into fairy floss confections was Vera Wang. Throughout the early naughties, Wang gradually developed a very soft palette that was slightly torn as the seasons went by. Then she turned to a very dark place and kept things there up until now, with the biggest difference being that there's definitely more structure in her silhouettes that have been absent for a while.
Narciso Rodriguez executes a fabulous recurring neckline this season, and it's great to see he's kept his ethic with a clear focus of a formula he obviously knows works.
Elie Tahari also shook things up a little, providing a very street savvy style that clearly lives in NYC. Chic hoods kept the mood with an edge and the slow introduction of colour unfolded like a story.
To lighten the series and keep things interesting, the brilliant design team at Rodarte successfully used floral, bringing them right up to the minute with drapes over the shoulders and an overall relaxed feel. This is no mean feat, remember the killing line delivered by Meryl Streep aka Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. "Floral. In Spring. Groundbreaking." See what I mean.
Derek Lam also offered drape as an alternative to the very rigid trend sweeping fashion thanks to Balmain's shoulder treatment. With a nod to Grecian goddesses everywhere, this collection should keep his growing client base happy.
Sophie Theallet is a name and label I'm only newly introduced to, but she still has a way to go in finding that new niche to carve. It was all a bit 'done' however I have confidence she'll find her footing in seasons to come.
And Mulberry is riding a very large wave of popularity thanks to Alexa Chung no doubt, everyone's 'girl crush' they keep talking about in the magazines on the MTV presenter often sees her toting a Mulberry bag. Very cool.
