New York AW 2010 | Day One

We finally have a professional in the drivers seat at BCBG Max Azria. And no I'm not biased just because I bought my 21st dress from his Paris boutique, but the design team there put together a completely professional and right on the money show. The opening look with draped stripes segued into bold block colours, and the styling was mixed up a little too. With either white or black tights, pants or block black shoes, this is how it's done. After Phoebe Philo's SS10 Celine show, everyone is back on the minimal appreciation bandwagon, and this BCBG collection will be sure to succeed. BCBG stands for Bon Chic Bon Genre, so Max is certainly living the good style, good kind life with this array of garments.
The designers at Acne are going for a more tribal feel. With animal skins and draped long skirts, I'm feeling a trend coming on.
Richard Chai Love is into it's second season, and he too took the liberty of taking hemlines south to the ankle. With a directional colour pallette, this collection should hopefully be enough to keep his established clients happy.
Gwen Stefani has quietly maintained her presence at New York Fashion week with her label L.A.M.B. Performing at great lengths to show how slashed and ripped will make a comeback, I was more appreciative of her nods to hounds tooth and classic staples inspired by Vivienne Westwood.
And finally, Vena Cava is one label that's not available here in Australia but definitely does a good job defining what NY fashion stands for. There was a bit of everything to keep shoppers happy, exactly what the US economy needs right now, and my favourite look was this draped skirt and top ensemble. The bug glasses as a styling technique told a story, but I'm not exactly sure how it ended. It's a unique take on roughing up a classic collection though, and I'm sure there's a niche for it.
I'm ready for the big guns in New York, Day One is put to bed.
